In CrossFit, right, we generally like the high bar back squat. The reason we like it is that it faces your body in a vertical position which is good for receiving the front and also for thrusters. With the high bar back squat, your grip is like, you know, comfortable. Nothing too crazy. Hands on the bar, you place that bar on your traps. It’s a very comfortable position. From here, as I said, it’s more of a quad dominant exercise. My goal is to stay truly vertical. So straight up, and straight down. So as I squat, straight up, straight down. Or straight down, straight up. Now the reason why again, is that, in the front squat, overhead squats, you got to keep a vertical torso. Very rarely that we want you guys in this position. Now, another type the low bar back squat- therreason why we like this one is it engages this stuff more. To do so we look for a nice, light grip. Thumbs up when you hold bar. I place my back here, okay? I lift my elbows to create a shelf. So you see a shelf right there? When I squat - watch what happens. When I’m here, I could bend over and the bar is still of my heels. If the bar is right here when I bend over, the bar is going to take me down with. Does it make sense? As the bar transfers down my back, it allows me to bend over when I squat. Now in this bent over position, what does it look like more? So, it’s more of hamstring and glutes to drive me up. So we like the high bar back squat. It translates well. We like the low bar back squats because it gets this one engaged. Be careful with the low bar back squat. Just a quick squat tip of the day.
